Custom Domains and SMTP

Why is it not possible to add SMTP settings at the organisational level? Custom Domains is described in the docs as a way to personalize the authentication experience by using an an organization's own domain name. This is what intrigued us since it seemed like the perfect setup for white labeling an application such that each domain can carry completley separate branding.
The only thing that is missing is to allow for setting SMTP at the organisational level. Without it users will receive verification emails from a domain that they are unfamiliar with which is a bad user experience.
This seems like a fairly simple feature which I do not understand why it has not been implemented??
