How do I use the "Use new login UI" checkbox?

I understand the purpose of the checkbox + "Custom base URL for the new Login UI" input is to use a self hosted version of the login ui at https://github.com/zitadel/zitadel/tree/main. However I tried checking the checkbox and changing the base URL and it made no difference. Can someone please clarify how that works?
